About the project

A global leader in pharmaceutical manufacturing recognized the need for improved communication and education for — but not limited to — their breast cancer patients. They envisioned a secure online platform to empower patients, enhance treatment adherence, and improve the overall patient experience.

The Challenges

Understanding the need to enhance patient support and engagement, the pharma company sought to develop a patient portal that would provide breast cancer patients with access to valuable resources, support services, and educational materials.

Some of the main challenges include:

1. Managing the strict German healthcare security regulations.
2. Offering the patients a customized experience while keeping it highly functional.
3. Maintaining a balance between customization and reusability.

The Objectives

1. Empower patients by offering them valuable resources and knowledge to help them manage their afflictions better and to support them continuously.
2. Targeted communication to deliver educational resources and support services specifically tailored to a patient’s diagnosis and treatment plan.
3. Brand reputation by building trust with patients and supporting them along their journey.

The Solutions

We previously worked with the same pharma company on an HCP portal for oncology healthcare professionals and used the same content management system and infrastructure to integrate the patient portal.

Some of the features of the patient portal include:

1. Allowing doctors to send patients tailored content — scientific articles, clinical trials, etc.
2. A secure patient log-in — patients who use a certain product will receive specific information about it.
3. A 3D application in which patients can see in 3D tumor positions and disease progression with specific symptoms.
4. An application that suggests food recipes, based on a questionnaire, to patients with a history of cancer.
5. Information resources that include interviews with doctors and patients.
6. A map to help patients find local support groups.
7. Expert forums, where patients can ask questions and receive answers from specialists.

The Results

By reusing the components and infrastructure from the HCP Portal, we ensured coherence between the platforms, which enabled the client’s moderation team to manage both easily. This reduced the time and human and monetary resources necessary for operating these portals.

The patient portal also greatly supported marketing campaigns, registering traffic growth of 20x over the course of a few months.
