About the project

A global leader in pharmaceutical manufacturing recognized the immense challenges and emotional distress associated with an oncology diagnosis. Together, we developed a secure patient resource generator to help HCPs securely share resources with patients and a patient-centric portal to support individuals diagnosed with cancer.

The Challenges

Among the main challenges for the pharma company were:

1. Offering a way for oncology healthcare professionals to easily search and share relevant information with their patients.
2. Centralizing helpful resources into a single platform dedicated to patients diagnosed with all types of cancer.
3. Finding a software development partner with knowledge of building portals in the pharma industry and navigating the MLR (Medical Legal Regulatory) process.
4. Launching the project while adhering to strict and short deadlines.

The Objectives

The main objective was to support and offer information to oncology patients to help them battle their disease. All the aspects of the platform had to go through a rigorous MLR process to ensure adherence to guidelines and regulations.

1. Implement a resource generator that allows healthcare professionals to create information packages based on their patient’s needs.
2. Maintain a consistent design for all the aspects of the portal, carefully crafted to be patient-centric.
3. Build a patient portal that centralizes all necessary information for oncology patients.
4. Increase organic traffic and improve patient engagement on the portal.

The Solutions

Our expert development team approached the project proactively, using their expertise in MLR and regulatory processes to offer consultancy and see the project through within the tight budget and timeline.

We used a design system to have consistency across all components and to increase delivery speed. Additionally, we used Magnolia, a headless CMS, for content management.

Here are some of the solutions we delivered:

1. We built a patient-centric portal that includes:

- Articles on multiple types of cancers, providing information on the disease, its effects on the body, and patient expectations.
- Articles on nutrition and wellness specifically crafted for oncology patients.
- Articles on the social aspects of the disease, including how to communicate their diagnosis and manage their emotions.
- External links to verified and official additional information carefully selected for different oncology cases.

2. We use the patient portal as the information source for the patient resource generator that HPCs used:

- The HCPs select a type of cancer, automatically adding the disease's main articles to the package.
- Next, physicians can add more articles based on the patient’s needs.
- When the package is ready, HCPs can share the resources by sharing a unique link, emailing it, or sharing the QR code. Once accessed, the portal displays only the selected helpful resources to patients.

3. We mediated the communication with the design and content agencies so that all regulatory processes happened promptly according to plan.

The Results

Our approach produced a final project that received industry recognition and won several internal awards. Additionally, the portal's accessibility features were carefully designed to accommodate the needs of any oncology patient.
